Hemus highway, which was badly damaged by the severe flooding that hit Bulgaria over the last two months, will be opened during the weekend.
Milosh Potskov, head of the state Roads Agency, explained that traffic will be restored at the closed 35th kilometer of the major highway, connecting capital Sofia with the northern parts of Bulgaria. That section of the highway was closed because of a massive landslide.
Potskov also said that all serious damages caused to the infrastructure would be repaired by the end of the next week.
Torrential rains once again hit Bulgaria in August, causing the third wave of severe floods this summer. Over the past three months, the bad weather has affected two million people and claimed the lives of at least 20, while 10,000 have lost their homes.
Material damages from the several waves of torrential rains and floods across large parts of Bulgaria have been estimated to exceed BGN 1 B. The total cost of the damages on Bulgaria's infrastructure amounts to BGN 350 M. |
