The Kalotina Checkpoint at Bulgaria's border with Serbia is going to be rebuilt completely by 2012. The construction of the new buildings and infrastructure at Kalotina is going to start in 2009 in execution of a project prepared in 2004. The EUR 50 M needed for the reconstruction of the checkpoint will be provided by the Ministry of Finance through a credit from the World Bank. On Friday Bulgaria's Minister of State Administration Nikolay Vasilev inspected the functioning of the "one-slip" system recently introduced at Kalotina. He was satisfied with what he saw, and pointed out the introduction of the new system at all border checkpoints was going to reduce the potential for corruption, and would increase the state revenue by over 10%. With the "one-slip" system, a car can go through the checkpoint for 7-8 minutes, whereas the procedure for trucks now takes 15 minutes fewer that it did before. Kalotina is one of Bulgaria's busiest border checkpoints, and is located 55 km northwest of the capital Sofia.
