Trapped Chilean Miners Might Be Rescued by Weekend Chilean officials hope to rescue the 33 trapped miners as early as this weekend, the BBC reported.
Pedro Buttazzoni, head of the drilling operations and head of the Chilean mining company Geotec, has told the BBC that only 160m more had to be drilled before they reach the men. He stated that they have already drilled 464m.
Buttazzoni has stated that they could reach the miners in 3-4 days.
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has also expressed his hope that the men could be rescued before he travels to Europe on October 15.
However, according to Jean Romagnoli, a sports physician who is in daily contact with the miners, the rescue could be very stressful.
"That's very dangerous. We want to prevent any type of overheating because that can produce thermal shock, when you7r temperature rises above 42 degrees Celsius, which decomposes the proteins and you can have a hard time recovering. That could be fatal," he told the BBC.
The miners were trapped by a rockfall at the mine near Copiapo, about 725 km north of the Chilean capital Santiago, on August 5 and were located by rescuers 17 days later.
